It emerged from the private collection of over 3,500 objects belonging to the traveller Wilhelm Joest, son of a Cologne sugar manufacturer. After his early death in 1897, the holdings became the property of his sister Adele, who was married to Eugen Rautenstrauch and lived in Cologne.
