The Weltmuseum Wien is an ethnographic museum with a wide range of collections and exhibitions. Most activities are focused on the exhibition and preservation of the collection, as well as the dissemination of knowledge. The museum conducts research in the curators‘ and conservators‘ respective areas of expertise and in collaboration with other museums, or institutions and communities.

The museum aims to attract and engage with local and diasporic communities through regular events. Another focus lies on the provenance research projects funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sports (BMKÖS). The museum is also an active member of the Benin dialogue group.
