The collections at the Natural History Museum Basel (NMB) originate in the Amersbach cabinet from 1661. Today, we care for more than 12 million objects. From these important regional and international collections, we generate knowledge and share it with the public. This is achieved in part through our exhibitions and educational services for children, young people, and schools, as well as through guided tours and public events.

A global network enables the museum to lead an extensive scientific dialogue, guaranteeing research and teaching of a very high standard. The employees of the NMB are involved in numerous scientific research projects of national and international significance. One current focus of their research is provenance research and the restitution of ancestral remains from colonial contexts.

Currently, the NNB is at a critical stage of transformation. It is amid a relocation and reconceptualization master plan and will open a new museum building with new exhibitions in 2029—a rare moment in the history of a museum and a unique experience for all who are part of this transformation.
