Visit websiteThe MARKK in Hamburg is among the largest German museums holding collections of world cultures and art. Through exhibitions, programming and research, it provides space for cultural encounters and critical reflection. Founded in an era of colonial power asymmetry, the museum today questions assumed certainties, encourages global citizenship through cooperation, and fosters an atmosphere of respect, openness and empathy. Our work is based on the collections. The museum is committed to preserving and expanding these collections as well as to making them accessible. Through its programming, the museum strives to promote the appreciation for and the knowledge of the cultures and arts of the world. In 2017, the museum embarked on a process of repositioning, which will result in alterations and a renovation of the building and improved accessibility of the collections through a new storage solution. At the same time, the museum is planning a new permanent display, which will be mounted with the reopening. The repositioning is an ongoing and extensive process that will continue to accompany the museum in the upcoming years.
